Gill backs bold calls for success

Shubman Gill says bold decisions key to getting best out of players
India’s Test captain Shubman Gill on Tuesday said that taking bold and calculated decisions is sometimes essential to bring out the best in players, as he continues to settle into his role as the team’s leader.
Gill, who recently captained India to a 2-0 series win over the West Indies following a 2-2 draw against England, reflected on his leadership approach after India’s seven-wicket victory in the second Test here.
“I try to make the most probable decision in the given situation that we’re in during a game,” Gill said. “Sometimes you have to take a little bit of bold decisions — that X factor — depending on which player can get you certain runs or those crucial wickets.”
The 25-year-old opener, who took over the Test captaincy earlier this year, has impressed with his calm and composed leadership style. Under his guidance, the team has shown tactical flexibility and renewed confidence, particularly among younger players.
Gill added that he aims to back his instincts and support players to perform freely, even in pressure situations. “As a captain, you need to trust your teammates’ abilities. My job is to create the environment where they can express themselves,” he said.
With India set to host New Zealand next month, Gill’s leadership approach and willingness to make bold calls will be under continued observation as the team prepares for an intense home season.
