Doctors Warn of ‘Reel-Induced Eye Damage’ Amid Rising Screen Time

Following concerns over the mental health impact of short-form videos, doctors are now issuing a stark warning about a new health crisis: “reel-induced eye damage.”

Excessive screen time, particularly from binge-watching short videos on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, is leading to an alarming rise in eye disorders across all age groups. Ophthalmologists have noted a significant spike in vision-related issues, particularly among children and young adults, who spend extended hours viewing reels.

The warning was shared by leading ophthalmologists at the ongoing Joint Meeting of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the All India Ophthalmological Society at the Yashobhoomi convention center. Experts explained that prolonged exposure to screens, coupled with the rapid, high-intensity visual stimulation of short-form content, is putting immense strain on the eyes, leading to a range of disorders, including digital eye strain, dry eyes, and blurred vision.

Doctors are urging individuals to take regular screen breaks, practice the 20-20-20 rule (look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes), and limit screen time to prevent long-term damage. The growing concern calls for greater awareness and action, especially as the consumption of reels continues to surge among younger audiences.
