Congress Warns of Protests if Power Tariff is Hiked in Odisha

The Congress party has warned of statewide protests if the Odisha government approves a power tariff hike for the upcoming financial year 2025-26.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, senior Congress leader and former minister Panchanan Kanungo stated that the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) is currently conducting hearings on proposed tariff hikes. Various power supply stakeholders have submitted their demands for an increase in electricity rates, raising concerns among domestic consumers.

“There is growing apprehension that power tariffs may be increased this time, which will directly impact the common people. Congress will not remain silent if such an unjustified hike is imposed,” Kanungo said.

The party has vowed to launch protests across Odisha if the hike is approved, demanding relief for consumers already burdened by rising costs of essential services. The final decision on the power tariff revision is expected after the OERC concludes its public hearings.
