Recognition of Mediation a Credible Pillar of Justice Delivery: CJI Justice Gavai

Bhubaneswar, Sep 27 : Chief Justice of India Justice BR Gavai today highlighted the significance of the Mediation Act, 2023, stating that statutory recognition has transformed mediation from an optional remedy into a credible pillar of India’s justice delivery system.

Addressing the Second National Mediation Conference held in Bhubaneswar, Justice Gavai noted that the Act ensures justice that is participatory, equitable, and accessible, while also helping reduce the growing pendency of cases before courts.

Chief Justice of Orissa High Court Justice Harish Tandon observed that Odisha has taken meaningful steps to expand mediation services across the state. Governor Haribabu Kambhampati added that mediation goes beyond dispute resolution, fostering trust, preserving relationships, and promoting social harmony. “It is a matter of pride that Odisha is hosting such a landmark event that will strengthen the culture of dialogue and consensus across the country,” he said, emphasizing that mediation is a timeless practice rooted in dialogue and fairness.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reiterated the state government’s commitment to judicial reforms and alternative dispute resolution, noting that the conference will further consolidate efforts to make mediation a cornerstone of India’s justice system, ensuring efficiency, inclusiveness, and trust in legal processes.

Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan praised the collaborative efforts of the judiciary and the government in promoting mediation nationwide. The conference was attended by several distinguished dignitaries, including Justice Surya Kant of the Supreme Court, Attorney General R. Venkataramani, Odisha Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, as well as Chief Justices and Judges from multiple states.

The event underlined the growing importance of mediation as a credible, effective, and accessible tool in India’s judicial landscape, bridging divides, healing relationships, and providing fair and lasting solutions.
