Blessings of Parents, Gurus: N Rajam

Blessings of my parents and gurus, says N. Rajam on Padma Vibhushan

Legendary violinist Dr N. Rajam, who has been named a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, on Sunday dedicated the prestigious honour to the blessings of her parents and gurus, saying their guidance shaped her musical journey.

Expressing gratitude after the announcement, Dr Rajam said the award was not just a personal achievement but a recognition of the rich tradition of Indian classical music that she has served for decades.

Widely credited with adapting the violin to the “gayaki ang” style of Hindustani classical music, a form traditionally dominated by vocalists, Dr Rajam is regarded as a pioneer who expanded the expressive possibilities of the instrument.

Born on April 8, 1938, in Chennai, she has been residing in Thane for over 50 years and has remained closely associated with the city’s cultural life while building an illustrious career as a performer and teacher.

Congratulatory messages poured in from musicians, students, and cultural institutions across the country, lauding her immense contribution to Indian classical music.

The Padma Vibhushan is India’s second-highest civilian award, conferred for exceptional and distinguished service in various fields.
