BJP Leader Pitabasa Panda Shot Dead

Odisha BJP Leader’s Killing: CM Orders Strong Action Against Assailants

Bhubaneswar, Oct 7: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday strongly condemned the brutal killing of senior advocate and BJP leader Pitabasa Panda, who was shot dead in Berhampur on Sunday night.

Expressing deep sorrow over Panda’s death, the Chief Minister directed the police to identify, apprehend, and ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible. “Odisha is a peaceful state, and such heinous acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Majhi said, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

According to police sources, Panda, a prominent BJP spokesperson for Ganjam district and noted RTI activist, was returning home on his two-wheeler when two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle shot him at point-blank range. The attackers fled immediately after the incident.

Locals rushed the grievously injured Panda to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination.

Authorities have launched a massive manhunt to nab the killers. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined, and a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to pursue the case. Raids are reportedly underway at multiple locations.

The Odisha Bar Council has condemned the killing, describing Panda as a committed and courageous advocate. Lawyers across the state have announced a pen-down strike on Tuesday, demanding swift justice and giving the government a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the culprits.

Meanwhile, Steel, Mines, and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, a close associate of Panda, termed the murder “cold-blooded and shocking,” alleging that a criminal syndicate may be behind the attack.

Panda’s killing has sparked widespread outrage across political and legal circles, with demands growing for a thorough investigation and stronger measures to curb rising crime in the state.
