BIS Announces 500 Internships for Students

Bureau of Indian Standards Announces 500 Internships for Students to Promote Standardisation Awareness

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body under the Government of India, has announced a significant initiative to offer 500 internships for students from partner institutions in the field of standardisation. The announcement came during the Annual Convention of BIS Standardisation Chairs and Nodal Faculty of MoU Partner Institutions.

The internships will provide students enrolled in various academic programmes—including 4-year and 5-year degree courses, postgraduates, and diploma courses—an opportunity to engage in hands-on experiences in the industries related to standardisation. The 8-week internship will involve pre-standardisation work, compliance surveys, and site visits to large-scale units, MSMEs, and laboratories. Students will be exposed to critical aspects of manufacturing, testing processes, and product quality compliance, helping to build practical knowledge about the manufacturing and quality assurance landscape.

This initiative aligns with BIS’s broader goal of embedding a culture of quality and standardisation within the Indian academia. In his inaugural address, Director General of BIS, Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, stressed the importance of collaboration between academia and industry to promote the understanding of national and global quality systems. Deputy Director General of BIS, Shri Rajeev Sharma, further encouraged institutions to actively participate in fostering quality culture through action-oriented collaborations.

The convention also highlighted key achievements of the BIS-Academia interface, such as the incorporation of standardisation modules into the curriculum of 15 institutes, the commissioning of over 130 research and development projects, and the formation of 198 Standards Clubs across 52 institutions. The programme has had a profound impact, with over 3,400 students from 74 institutes participating in national quizzes, and plans for 500 student internships in the upcoming 2025-26 academic year.

In addition to announcing the internship programme, the convention hosted technical sessions on curriculum integration, student engagement through Standards Clubs, and strategies for enhancing academic collaboration. The event concluded with a shared commitment from all stakeholders to strengthen the culture of standardisation across India’s academic institutions.

The BIS also recognised the top-performing institutions under the MoU for their outstanding contributions to BIS-related activities. These included IIT Roorkee, SSEC Chennai, NIT Jalandhar, SVCE Chennai, and PSNACET Dindigul.

This initiative is expected to provide invaluable exposure to students, offering them an opportunity to engage with industry practices while contributing to India’s growing emphasis on quality assurance and standardisation.
