India’s Aviation Sector: A Revolution in Progress

India’s aviation sector is soaring to new heights, thanks to a series of transformative reforms and significant infrastructure developments. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has spearheaded initiatives that have not only modernized the industry but also made air travel more accessible and affordable for millions of Indians.

Key highlights of this revolution include the passage of the Protection of Interest in Aircraft Objects Bill, 2025, which aligns India’s aviation leasing laws with international standards, reducing leasing costs for Indian airlines. Additionally, the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam 2024, which replaces the colonial-era Aircraft Act, aims to streamline regulatory processes and promote indigenous manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

In terms of infrastructure, India has seen impressive growth, with the operationalization of 12 new Greenfield airports since 2014 and plans for 50 more in the next five years. The UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which seeks to make air travel more affordable and accessible, has already connected 619 routes and 88 airports, including regions previously underserved.

Passenger traffic is also witnessing exponential growth. Domestic air passenger traffic exceeded 22 crore in 2024, and India’s aviation market has become the third-largest globally. The UDAN scheme alone has facilitated affordable air travel for over 1.5 crore passengers and aims to extend this to 4 crore in the coming decade.

The government has also made strides in sustainability, with approximately 80 airports now operating on 100% green energy, aligning with global standards for carbon neutrality. In addition, the introduction of new aviation technologies, such as the Digi Yatra system for seamless travel, is transforming the passenger experience.

As part of the nation’s preparations for the future, the Ministry is also focusing on training the next generation of aviation professionals. With the demand for pilots set to increase significantly, the government is expanding flight training organizations to cater to this need.

India’s aviation revolution is not only about expanding infrastructure and increasing traffic but also about creating a sustainable, inclusive, and globally competitive aviation ecosystem. This robust development is integral to the country’s aspirations of becoming a developed nation by 2047, embodying the spirit of “Viksit Bharat @2047.”
