Amit Shah, Odisha CM Review Implementation of New Criminal Laws
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah held a high-level review meeting with Odisha Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi in New Delhi to assess the implementation progress of the three new criminal laws in the state.
The meeting, attended by senior officials including the Union Home Secretary, Odisha’s Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and heads of BPRD and NCRB, focused on ensuring full adoption of the new legal provisions across police, prisons, courts, prosecution, and forensic systems in the state.
Push for 100% Implementation in Six Months
Highlighting the importance of prompt adoption, Shri Amit Shah emphasized that the Odisha government should aim for 100% implementation of the new criminal laws over the next six months, urging administrative coordination at every level.
“These laws are vital for improving law and order, especially as Odisha is poised for significant industrial and technological growth in the coming decade,” Shah stated. He stressed that timely and effective enforcement would help build a modern and robust justice system in the state.
Structured Monitoring Mechanism Suggested
To ensure accountability and regular progress tracking, the Union Home Minister proposed a structured review mechanism:
- Weekly reviews by the State Home Secretary
- Fortnightly reviews by the Chief Secretary and DGP
- Monthly reviews by the Chief Minister
This layered oversight would help address any implementation bottlenecks in real time and ensure timely adaptation of the new legal framework.
The review meeting underscored the Centre’s commitment to assisting states in the smooth implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which are designed to modernize India’s criminal justice system.
Odisha’s top officials reaffirmed their dedication to the timeline and shared progress updates on current implementation efforts.
