Ashutosh Rana Values Depth Over Applause

Ashutosh Rana: True Appreciation Lies in Understanding the Character’s Core

Acclaimed actor Ashutosh Rana, known for his powerful portrayals of complex and often negative characters, believes that when an audience truly understands the essence of a character, the appreciation for the artist naturally follows.

Currently playing the role of Ravana in the theatrical production Humare Ram, which reimagines the epic Ramayana from a fresh perspective, Rana spoke about the deep connection between the audience and the craft of acting. In a telephonic interview with PTI, the actor emphasized that the real success of a performance lies not in being loved or hated, but in being understood.

“When they understand the core of the character and appreciate the art it represents, the artist is appreciated naturally,” Rana said.

He added that negative characters often evoke strong reactions — and that, too, is a form of appreciation. “For me, the greatest reward is not about being loved or hated — it’s about the audience recognising and valuing the craft.”

Rana, who has earned critical acclaim for roles in films like Dushman, Sangharsh, and Raaz, continues to challenge stereotypes by bringing depth and nuance to his characters. His portrayal of Ravana aims to present a more layered interpretation of the epic antagonist, highlighting motivations and dilemmas that go beyond traditional villainy.

Humare Ram has been lauded for its thoughtful retelling of the Ramayana, and Rana’s performance is central to its emotional and philosophical core.

Through his reflections, Rana underlines the evolving nature of storytelling in Indian theatre and cinema — where appreciation is increasingly tied to depth, understanding, and emotional truth.
