Odisha Govt Sends Ministers to Probe Illegal Coal Mining in Sundargarh
In response to mounting allegations of illegal coal mining and smuggling in Sundargarh district, the Odisha government has taken decisive action by sending two ministers to conduct an on-the-spot investigation.
Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena and Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia were deputed to the Gopalpur forest range under Hemagiri block, where the illegal activities are alleged to be taking place.
During their visit on Friday, the ministers inspected nearly a dozen suspected coal mining sites and held discussions with officials from the district mining and forest departments. The visit aimed to assess the ground reality and evaluate any lapses in enforcement and oversight.
The state government has faced increasing public pressure and political heat over reports of unauthorized coal extraction and smuggling in forested areas of Sundargarh.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the findings of the visit, but further action is expected based on the ministers’ report.
