Hundreds of electricity consumers in Odisha staged a demonstration in front of the state Assembly on Friday, protesting against the proposed power tariff hike. The agitation, led by the Odisha Electricity Consumers’ Association, demanded an immediate rollback of the tariff increase.
The protesters also urged the BJP-led government to fulfill its election promise of providing 300 units of free electricity per month to consumers. Additionally, they demanded free power for farmers, an end to the privatization of the electricity sector, and the provision of electricity bills in the Odia language.
Speaking at the protest, association members criticized the government for burdening consumers with rising electricity costs and called for urgent action to ease the financial strain on households.
The demonstration saw participation from various sections of society, with protestors warning of intensified agitation if their demands were not met. Authorities have yet to issue an official response regarding the concerns raised by the demonstrators.
