In an intriguing turn of events, twelve members from various royal families in Odisha are stepping into the political arena, contesting both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state. With elections scheduled from May 13 to June 1, Odisha’s political landscape is witnessing a unique blend of tradition and modern democracy.
The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has nominated eight candidates from royal lineages, followed by the BJP with three, and the Congress with one candidate. Ten royal family members are contesting for Assembly seats, while two are in the fray for Lok Sabha polls.
Among the notable candidates is Sulakshana Geetanjali Devi, the granddaughter of veteran leader late A N Singhdeo of Dharakote, who is vying for the Sanakhemundi assembly constituency. Hailing from a political lineage, Sulakshana aims to continue her family’s legacy of public service.
Chinmayananda Srirup Deb, son of Usha Devi, royal scion of Chikiti, is another significant contender, contesting from the Chikiti Assembly segment. With a background in IT and business, Srirup Deb brings a modern approach to traditional politics.
The BJP has re-nominated Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo, a member of the Bolangir royal family, for the Bolangir Lok Sabha seat. Her husband, senior BJP leader KV Singh Deo, is also in the electoral fray, reflecting a familial commitment to public service.
The BJD’s selection of candidates reflects a strategic move to leverage the popularity and goodwill associated with royal families. From Bolangir to Kalahandi, royal scions are vying for electoral success, aiming to address the concerns of their constituents and contribute to the state’s development.
Despite the changing political landscape, royal families continue to command respect and influence among villagers. With a legacy of leadership and public service, these candidates symbolize a blend of tradition and modern governance.
As Odisha gears up for elections, the participation of royal family members adds a unique dimension to the political discourse, highlighting the enduring legacy of princely states and their contributions to the state’s political history.
