11,710 Children in Odisha Suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition: Deputy CM

Bhubaneswar: In a concerning revelation, the Odisha government disclosed in the Assembly on Saturday that 11,710 children in the state are suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who heads the Women and Child Development Department, provided these figures while responding to a query raised by BJP MLA Laxman Bag.

Highlighting the regional disparities, the Deputy CM noted that Mayurbhanj, a predominantly tribal district, has recorded the highest number of SAM cases, with 1,460 affected children. This data underscores the pressing need for intensified nutritional interventions in the state, particularly in tribal and underprivileged areas.

The government has yet to elaborate on specific measures being implemented to address this alarming situation. However, the figures serve as a stark reminder of the critical challenge of malnutrition among children in Odisha.

Experts emphasize the need for targeted nutritional programs, enhanced access to healthcare, and community awareness to combat SAM and ensure healthier futures for the affected children.
