Study Finds Air Pollution Can Impair Cognition and Daily Tasks

Short-term exposure to air pollution can negatively impact cognitive abilities, affecting emotional intelligence, focus, and decision-making, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham, UK, conducted an experiment involving 26 adults, splitting them into two groups—one exposed to high levels of air pollution using candle smoke and the other to clean air.

The study found that brief exposure to particulate matter (PM) pollution impaired higher-order cognitive functions, including self-control and sustained attention, which are essential for work performance and daily activities.

The findings highlight the detrimental impact of air pollution on brain function, reinforcing concerns about its long-term effects on mental sharpness and productivity. Researchers emphasized the need for air quality improvements to mitigate these risks.
