Severe Cyclone Dana Approaches Odisha Coast, Evacuations Underway
Cyclonic storm Dana intensified and moved closer to the Odisha coast on Thursday, now lying just 200 km away. Heavy rain and strong winds have already impacted several parts of the state, while the sea remains rough, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In anticipation of the cyclone’s landfall, the Odisha government has accelerated evacuation efforts in coastal districts. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi held a high-level review meeting, urging officials to ensure a “zero casualty” outcome during the disaster.
The IMD predicts that Cyclone Dana will make landfall early Friday between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 120 kilometers per hour (kmph). Authorities are on high alert, and precautionary measures are being enforced to minimize damage and safeguard lives.
