Sangamam Power Project to Establish 1000 MW Pumped Storage Project in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: Telangana-based Sangamam Power Project Company has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for setting up a 1000 MW Pumped Storage Project (PSP) at Sunki in Odisha’s Koraput district. The initiative is set to strengthen the state’s renewable energy capacity and support its commitment to green energy.
During the recent Utkarsh Odisha Conclave held in Bhubaneswar, Sangamam Power Project Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Odisha government for establishing the PSP. The project, once operational, will generate 1000 MW of electricity for six hours daily during peak hours using a reverse turbine mechanism.
Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo, who reviewed the project’s progress on Monday, emphasized the state’s commitment to renewable energy. He mentioned that Odisha has identified 45 locations suitable for PSP projects, out of which 10 will be implemented by various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) at the government level. Additionally, some private companies have independently identified potential sites, and development rights will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
Officials from Sangamam Power Project Company have urged the Odisha government to provide single-window clearance and other incentives to facilitate the project’s establishment. Singhdeo reiterated that Odisha remains dedicated to expanding its green energy infrastructure and supporting sustainable power generation.
With its growing focus on PSP projects, Odisha aims to enhance energy storage capabilities and ensure a stable power supply during peak demand periods. The 1000 MW PSP at Sunki is expected to play a crucial role in meeting these objectives.
