Sandhya Majhi Becomes Odisha’s First Woman Government Driver, Breaks Gender Barrier
In a historic milestone for gender equality and women’s empowerment in Odisha, 45-year-old Sandhya Rani Majhi from Mayurbhanj district has become the state’s first woman to be appointed as a government vehicle driver.
The groundbreaking appointment was confirmed by state officials on Monday. Sandhya, a resident of Suleipat village in Mayurbhanj, has paved the way for aspiring women across Odisha to take up roles traditionally dominated by men.
Her journey, marked by perseverance and a lifelong passion for driving, has now culminated in a proud moment for both her family and the state. Speaking to the media, Sandhya shared, “Ever since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by cars and driving. It’s always been a dream of mine.”
Despite facing societal norms and limited opportunities, Sandhya pursued driving with dedication, receiving her license and undergoing the necessary training and certifications to qualify for the government post.
Officials from the state transport department praised her achievement, stating that her selection reflects Odisha’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and equal opportunity in government services. “Sandhya’s appointment is not just a personal success story—it’s a symbol of change and progress,” an official said.
Sandhya is currently posted in Mayurbhanj district and is expected to inspire more women to enter the workforce in diverse roles, especially in public service sectors.
Women’s rights activists and local residents have lauded the state’s move, calling it a significant step in encouraging gender diversity in government jobs.
Sandhya’s appointment not only fulfills her childhood dream but also marks a turning point in challenging traditional gender roles in the workplace.
