Sambalpur, Oil India sign bio-gas MoU

Sambalpur inks MoU with Oil India for bio-gas plant
In a major step toward sustainable waste management and green energy generation, the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oil India Limited (OIL) for the establishment of a Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plant in the city.
The upcoming facility aims to convert household waste into clean fuel, promoting an eco-friendly approach to urban waste management. According to officials, Sambalpur generates around 196 tonnes of solid waste every day, which will now be processed to produce bio-gas instead of being dumped or landfilled.
“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our journey toward sustainable development. The CBG plant will not only address waste disposal challenges but also contribute to clean energy generation and reduce carbon emissions,” said an SMC official.
The project will be developed under the waste-to-wealth initiative, aligning with the government’s Swachh Bharat Mission and Energy Transition goals. Oil India Limited will provide the necessary technical expertise and investment for the plant’s setup and operation, while SMC will ensure waste collection and segregation at the source.
Once operational, the plant is expected to produce compressed bio-gas that can be used for fueling vehicles or industrial applications, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting a circular economy model.
Officials added that the initiative will also generate local employment opportunities and set a model for other cities in western Odisha to adopt sustainable waste management practices.
