Raj Khosla Turns 100, Cinema Remembers

Raj Khosla@100: Celebrating the Maestro of Suspense and Melodrama in Hindi Cinema

Raj Khosla, the visionary filmmaker behind some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic thrillers and melodramas, would have turned 100 this Saturday. On this special occasion, the film community and cinephiles are coming together to honor his enduring legacy with a one-day retrospective of his restored classics in Mumbai.

From starting his career as a stunt double for a heroine to directing Bollywood legends and shaping the careers of many — including introducing Waheeda Rehman in her Hindi film debut — Raj Khosla’s journey in cinema was nothing short of extraordinary. Though he originally aspired to become a singer, fate had other plans, leading him to become one of the foremost directors in the crime-suspense genre.

Known for cult classics such as CID (1956), Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Mera Saaya (1966), and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978), Khosla combined taut storytelling with rich emotional depth, often accompanied by unforgettable music. His collaborations with music directors like S.D. Burman and Madan Mohan resulted in timeless melodies that remain popular and frequently remixed to this day.

In a career spanning 34 years and just over 25 films, Raj Khosla managed to leave an indelible mark on Hindi cinema. His films stood out not only for their gripping narratives and star-studded casts but also for their technical finesse and emotional resonance.

The centenary celebration serves as a reminder of a filmmaker whose contribution to Indian cinema deserves greater recognition. As audiences revisit his work, Raj Khosla’s status as a master storyteller — blending suspense, romance, and drama with cinematic flair — continues to shine through.
