Punjab Announces Zone-Wise Paddy Sowing

Punjab to Begin Zone-Wise Paddy Cultivation from June 1: CM Bhagwant Mann
In a significant move aimed at improving water conservation and agricultural efficiency, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that paddy cultivation in the state will commence in a phased, zone-wise manner starting June 1.
Speaking at the ‘Sarkar Kisaan Milni’ event held in Ludhiana, CM Mann said the state has been divided into three zones, each with a specific sowing schedule. “The cultivation of paddy will begin on June 1, June 5, and June 9 respectively in different districts based on the zonal division,” he stated.
The decision is part of the government’s broader efforts to address depleting groundwater levels and promote sustainable farming practices. Traditionally, paddy sowing across Punjab begins simultaneously in early June, leading to excessive strain on water resources.
Highlighting Punjab’s pivotal role in the country’s food security, CM Mann remarked, “Punjab is the food bowl of India, contributing nearly 45% of the grains to the national food pool. It is our responsibility to maintain this contribution while also safeguarding our environment and natural resources.”
The new schedule is expected to stagger water usage across the state and reduce the burden on the power supply for irrigation, ultimately benefiting both farmers and the environment.
Officials from the agriculture department have been directed to coordinate closely with farmers to ensure smooth implementation of the new sowing timeline.
The move has garnered mixed reactions from the farming community, with some welcoming the initiative for its ecological focus, while others have sought more clarity on implementation and support measures. The state government is expected to hold additional meetings with farmer unions in the coming weeks to address their concerns.
