Prime Minister Modi Witnesses Lao Ramayan Performance, Highlights India-Laos Cultural Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed a captivating performance of the Lao Ramayan, known as Phalak Phalam or Phra Lak Phra Ram, presented by the prestigious Royal Theatre of Luang Prabang. The performance, part of his visit to Laos, reflects the deep cultural and civilizational bonds shared between India and Laos.
The Ramayan, a cherished epic in both countries, continues to be celebrated in Laos, symbolizing the long-standing heritage and historical connections between the two nations. The performance was attended by prominent dignitaries, including the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Education and Sports, the Governor of the Bank of Lao PDR, and the Mayor of Vientiane.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of this cultural exchange, highlighting how Indian traditions and cultural practices have been preserved in Laos for centuries. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is also actively contributing to these efforts by restoring the Vat Phou temple complex and related historical monuments in Laos.
Prior to the Ramayan performance, the Prime Minister participated in a sacred blessing ceremony led by senior Buddhist monks from the Central Buddhist Fellowship Organization of Lao PDR. The ceremony was led by Most Venerable Mahaveth Masenai, the revered abbot of Si Saket temple in Vientiane. This shared Buddhist heritage further underscores the close civilizational ties between the two countries.
The Prime Minister’s engagement in these cultural and religious events reflects India’s commitment to fostering and illuminating its rich, shared history with Laos, reinforcing the importance of preserving and promoting cultural heritage in the region.
