President Murmu Hosts EU Leaders, Highlights India–EU Strategic Partnership
President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu hosted H.E. António Costa, President of the European Council, and H.E. Ms Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. The visit marked the first time the European Union participated as Chief Guests in India’s Republic Day celebrations. A banquet was also hosted in their honour.
Welcoming the EU leaders, President Murmu emphasized that India and Europe are connected not only by contemporary interests but also by shared values such as democracy, pluralism, and an open market economy. She noted that over the past two decades, the India–EU Strategic Partnership has strengthened significantly, reflecting mutual trust and a shared vision for a stable and rules-based international order.
In her remarks, the President highlighted India and the EU’s shared responsibility in maintaining global stability amidst uncertainty and conflict. “Our cooperation sends a clear message in support of diplomacy, multilateralism, and peaceful coexistence,” she said.
Economic cooperation was underscored as a key pillar of India–EU relations. President Murmu welcomed the successful conclusion of the historic India–EU Free Trade Agreement, noting it will bring significant positive changes to the lives of people in both regions. She also highlighted collaboration in technology, calling for joint efforts in “responsible innovation,” and pointed to new opportunities for the defence industry through the Security and Defence Partnership finalized during the visit.
President Murmu further emphasized India’s interest in deepening cooperation with the EU in clean energy, climate finance, and sustainable technologies. She expressed confidence that the agreements concluded during this visit will strengthen the India–EU Strategic Partnership and contribute to shaping a sustainable, inclusive, and humane global future.
The three leaders agreed that India and the EU are emerging as a force for balance, stability, and optimism on the global stage.
