Odisha’s Dhanu Jatra in Bargarh Aims for Global Spotlight
The Odisha government is making significant efforts to secure international recognition for the famed Dhanu Jatra, an annual theatrical festival held in Bargarh. Culture Minister Surjyabanshi Suraj announced on Sunday that the upcoming Dhanu Jatra 2025, scheduled from January 3 to January 13, will showcase Odisha’s rich cultural heritage on a global stage.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said, “The government is committed to ensuring Dhanu Jatra garners global recognition. To achieve this, Rs 1 crore has already been allocated for the festival, with an additional Rs 50 lakh sanctioned for live broadcasting, the creation of a dedicated website, and other associated expenses.”
Dhanu Jatra, known as the world’s largest open-air theatre, reenacts mythological episodes from Lord Krishna’s life, particularly his visit to Mathura to end the reign of tyrannical King Kansa. The festival transforms the entire Bargarh town into a massive stage, drawing thousands of spectators every year.
The state government has also taken steps to enhance the festival’s outreach through live streaming and dedicated digital platforms. These initiatives aim to attract a wider audience and highlight Odisha’s cultural vibrancy on the global map.
Dhanu Jatra is expected to witness a grand celebration in 2025, with extensive preparations underway to make it a memorable event for visitors and participants alike.
