Odisha to Launch Integrated Statistical System for Better Governance
Bhubaneswar, April 4: In a significant move aimed at enhancing data-driven governance, the Odisha government is set to roll out the Odisha Integrated Statistical System (OISS). The new system will streamline cooperation and coordination among administrative departments, ensuring the timely and reliable flow of data crucial for informed policymaking.
The initiative, supported by the World Bank under the Odisha State Capability and Resilient Growth Program, is expected to greatly strengthen the state’s statistical ecosystem and overall governance framework.
A technical mission from the World Bank, led by Thomas Danielewitz, Senior Economist and Team Lead, conducted an in-depth review with officials from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) over a two-day meeting held on Thursday and Friday. Discussions revolved around strategies to enhance Odisha’s statistical infrastructure and data systems.
The World Bank delegation also met with Anu Garg, Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary, for a conclusive discussion on the progress and future roadmap of the project. Dr. B.B. Nanda, Director of Economics and Statistics, along with other senior officials, participated in the sessions.
Key highlights of the discussions included the adoption of the Generic Statistical Business Process Model (GSBPM) across all statistical operations of the State Government. Experts emphasized aligning with global best practices and advanced technologies to elevate Odisha’s data capabilities.
The plan also includes capacity-building programs for DES officials, including exposure visits to leading states and countries to gain insights into international practices.
Development Commissioner Anu Garg appreciated the efforts and underscored the importance of embracing the latest in hardware and software technology to build a robust, modern statistical system. She stressed that a well-functioning data system is the backbone of evidence-based planning and policy formulation.
The OISS, once operational, is expected to play a pivotal role in improving governance, enhancing inter-departmental coordination, and accelerating the state’s development trajectory through data-led decisions.
