Odisha Government Launches Probe into Unnatural Elephant Deaths
The Odisha government has initiated a thorough investigation into the unnatural deaths of approximately 60 wild elephants across the state, sparking widespread concern. The state’s Forest Minister, Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia, has directed a detailed probe to determine the underlying causes and identify those responsible for any negligence.
In an official statement released on Sunday, Singkhuntia announced that he has written to Additional Chief Secretary (Forest), Satyabrat Sahu, calling for an in-depth, division-wise inquiry. The minister emphasized the need for stringent action against officials if found guilty of any lapses in duty that may have contributed to these tragic incidents.
The inquiry comes in response to growing alarm among wildlife activists and conservationists, who have been raising concerns over the safety and protection of elephants in the state. Odisha, known for its rich wildlife, has been grappling with increasing threats to its elephant population, including poaching, habitat loss, and human-elephant conflict.
Singkhuntia’s directive aims to ensure accountability and reinforce the government’s commitment to wildlife conservation. The Forest Department will now conduct a comprehensive investigation, and officials will be expected to submit their findings for appropriate follow-up action.
