Odisha CM Welcomes Sri Lankan Delegation, Stresses Peace and Shared Prosperity
Bhubaneswar, Aug 26: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday called upon a visiting Sri Lankan delegation to work together in fostering peace, friendship, and shared prosperity while strengthening cultural and economic ties between the two regions.
Interacting with the 30-member delegation, comprising Press Officers from the Office of the Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Ministry of External Affairs, and Department of Government Information, Majhi emphasized the deep-rooted historical and cultural links binding Odisha and Sri Lanka.
“Our past is rooted not only in history but also in mythology. Our relationship is a shining example of friendship, goodwill, and brotherhood that has endured for millennia,” the Chief Minister said, recalling the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle Mahavamsa which traces the origins of Prince Vijaya, the first king of Sri Lanka, to Kalinga.
Highlighting Odisha’s maritime heritage, Majhi noted how sailors from Kalinga once carried rice, horses, and elephants to Sri Lanka, while pearls and silver came back in return. He said the legacy continues to be celebrated through the Bali Jatra festival in Cuttack, where Sri Lankan envoys participated last year.
Majhi also underlined Odisha’s progress in sports, industry, tourism, and disaster management, stating: “Odisha has emerged as a hub for investment and sporting excellence. Our disaster preparedness is among the best in the world, consistently saving countless lives during cyclones.”
Welcoming the delegation, Information & PR Additional Chief Secretary Hemant Sharma highlighted Odisha’s economic aspirations, noting that the state’s economy currently stands at USD 110 billion, with a vision to become a USD 500-billion economy by 2036, coinciding with its centenary as a linguistic state.
During their five-day visit, the Sri Lankan team will study Odisha’s disaster management practices, strategies for international sports event organization, and communication methods in tourism and heritage promotion. Their itinerary includes visits to the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), Konark Sun Temple, Dhauli Peace Pagoda, Kalinga Stadium, and Chilika Lake.
Majhi concluded his interaction by expressing optimism for stronger cooperation in tourism, culture, education, sports, and industry, reiterating Odisha’s readiness to share experiences and build new opportunities together.
