Odisha CM Urges Mahanadi Dispute Talks

Odisha CM Calls for Amicable Resolution of Mahanadi Water Dispute with Chhattisgarh
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has called for a peaceful and mutually agreeable resolution to the ongoing Mahanadi water dispute with neighbouring Chhattisgarh. He emphasised that direct negotiations between both states, backed by the Centre, could help break the prolonged deadlock over the river’s water-sharing issue.
Chairing a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan, CM Majhi stated that the efforts currently underway through the Central Water Commission (CWC) were moving at a slow pace. He suggested that bilateral dialogue, with central government involvement, could pave the way for an amicable settlement.
“The Chief Minister said that since the efforts being made to resolve the problem in the Central Water Commission are progressing slowly, it can be amicably resolved through negotiations between both states with the support of the central government,” the CMO said in an official statement.
The Mahanadi water dispute has remained a contentious issue between Odisha and Chhattisgarh for several years, with concerns raised over upstream projects in Chhattisgarh affecting water availability in Odisha, especially during lean periods.
CM Majhi’s appeal signals a renewed attempt to engage all stakeholders and ensure fair water distribution while safeguarding the interests of the people of Odisha.
