Odisha clears ₹240-cr Mahanadi riverfront scheme

Odisha CM Approves ₹240-Crore Mahanadi River Bank Development Scheme

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday approved a ₹240-crore project aimed at transforming key stretches along the banks of the Mahanadi river into major tourist destinations, officials said.

The initiative, named the Mahanadi River Front Development Scheme, will be executed over a period of three years, spanning from 2025-26 to 2027-28.

Often described as the lifeline of Odisha, the 851-km-long Mahanadi originates in Chhattisgarh and flows 494 km through Odisha before draining into the Bay of Bengal. The river passes through important regions including Cuttack, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Birmaharajpur and Subalaya.

Officials stated that the scheme will focus on developing riverfront amenities, beautification projects, and eco-friendly tourism infrastructure to attract visitors, boost local livelihoods, and preserve the cultural and ecological heritage of the river.

The project is expected to not only strengthen tourism in the state but also highlight the Mahanadi’s historical and cultural significance, making it a hub for recreational and heritage activities.
