Odisha Climbs to 7th Spot in India Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme, Records 1.74 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations

Bhubaneswar, Aug 21: Odisha has moved up from 13th to seventh position across the country under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, emerging as one of India's fastest-growing rooftop solar markets, according to a report by The New Indian Express.

Data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) shows that Odisha has recorded 1.74 lakh rooftop solar installations, while applications under the scheme have crossed 3.12 lakh.

The number of applications has increased from 1,95,513 to 3,12,527, while completed rooftop solar installations have risen sharply from 72,538 to 1.74 lakh.

With the increase in installations, the proportion of applications converted into completed systems has also improved significantly. The conversion rate has risen from 37.1 per cent to 53.4 per cent.

The growth has been attributed partly to the additional top-up subsidy provided by the Odisha government over and above the central assistance available under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.

Implementation of the rooftop solar programme is being undertaken by the state's four electricity distribution companies — TPCODL, TPWODL, TPNODL and TPSODL.

The discoms are responsible for various aspects of implementation, including net metering, inspections, commissioning, coordination with vendors and consumer awareness and outreach.

Among the four distribution companies, TPCODL has recorded the highest number of installations at 56,842. It is followed by TPWODL with 48,905 installations, TPNODL with 44,785 and TPSODL with 23,881.

Gajanan Kale, Chief of Odisha Distribution Business at Tata Power, said Odisha's rise to seventh position nationally and the crossing of the 1.5 lakh installation milestone reflected growing consumer confidence in clean energy.

According to Kale, the state's rooftop solar capacity has now reached close to 410 MWp.

The rapid growth in installations highlights the increasing adoption of rooftop solar among households in Odisha and the state's growing contribution to India's renewable energy transition.
