The government has set a foodgrain production target of 373.93 million tonnes for the 2026-27 crop year amid concerns over the possible impact of El Nino weather conditions on agriculture.
The target is 2.63 million tonnes lower than the actual foodgrain production of 376.56 million tonnes recorded during the 2025-26 crop year. However, it remains significantly higher than the 362 million tonnes target fixed for 2025-26.
For the 2026-27 crop year, the government has set a foodgrain production target of 196.21 million tonnes for the kharif season and 177.72 million tonnes for the rabi season.
The lower overall target comes amid concerns that El Nino-related weather conditions could affect rainfall patterns and crop yields. The government’s production estimates will depend on the progress of the monsoon, weather conditions and agricultural performance during both cropping seasons.
The foodgrain production target covers major crops including rice, wheat, pulses, coarse cereals and other foodgrains.
