The discovery traces its roots back to the ‘Abhor’ expedition of 1911-12, a punitive military expedition against the indigenous people of the Siang Valley. Accompanying this expedition was a team of researchers dedicated to documenting the region’s natural history and geography.

The expedition team undertook extensive exploration and mapping of the valley, meticulously cataloguing a wide array of flora and fauna. Their comprehensive documentation included various plants, frogs, lizards, fish, birds, mammals, and insects. The findings from this expedition were published in several volumes from 1912 to 1922 in the Records of the Indian Museum.

The recent discovery of the blue ant adds a new chapter to the rich biodiversity of the Siang Valley.
