New Delhi: The University of Chicago commemorated the 10th anniversary of its Center in Delhi with the launch of the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth in India. The milestone celebration highlighted a decade of collaborations across disciplines, while unveiling ambitious plans to address global challenges like climate change, sustainable development, and equitable access to education.

The newly launched Institute, which began in Chicago on October 30, aims to balance climate action with sustainable growth. It will serve as a hub for groundbreaking research in areas such as energy technology, climate systems engineering, and sustainable growth economics. By fostering collaborations with local partners, the Institute builds on the Delhi Center’s legacy of nurturing impactful projects since its inception in 2014.

Reflecting on the occasion, Supratik Guha, Faculty Director of the UChicago Center in Delhi, emphasized the importance of partnerships in addressing pressing global issues. He noted, “This milestone is a springboard for future collaborations to tackle challenges like climate change, equitable education, and sustainable development. We are committed to translating innovative ideas into global impact.”

The event also showcased the University’s enduring partnership with India through initiatives like the US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET). UChicago researchers have driven impactful projects in areas like electricity market improvements, real-time water pollution monitoring, advanced weather forecasting for farmers, and emissions market formation.

Michael Greenstone, Director of the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth, highlighted the Institute’s mission, stating, “Our aim is to balance the need for inexpensive energy for growth with the imperative to address climate change. Both are critical for global well-being, and India is at the forefront of this balancing act.”

The celebration engaged key stakeholders, including government officials, academic leaders, and industry experts. Keynote addresses by V. Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economist of India, and Shri Manoj Ahuja, Chief Secretary of Odisha, spotlighted the role of policy and macro stability in shaping India’s sustainable growth story.
