Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound Premieres at Cannes

Neeraj Ghaywan Brings Basharat Peer’s Story to Life with Cannes-Premiered ‘Homebound’

Acclaimed filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan has said he felt an immediate connection with the story of Homebound, his latest cinematic offering that premiered at the prestigious 78th Cannes Film Festival under the Un Certain Regard segment.

The film, inspired by journalist Basharat Peer’s poignant article “Taking Amrit Home”, tells a deeply emotional tale rooted in the socio-political landscape of Kashmir. Ghaywan, known for his nuanced storytelling in films like Masaan and Geeli Pucchi, said the story resonated with him from the moment he read it.

“As soon as I came across Peer’s article, I knew I had to make this film,” Ghaywan shared, expressing gratitude to his cast and crew. “This film wouldn’t be possible without the passion and commitment of my entire team.”

Homebound stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles. The film’s selection for Cannes has been celebrated as a significant recognition of Indian cinema on the global stage. Through its narrative, Homebound explores themes of memory, displacement, and identity, reflecting the human cost of conflict with profound sensitivity.

The film’s premiere at Cannes has generated strong critical interest, with many praising its emotional depth and Ghaywan’s directorial vision.
