Modi Gifts Ghana Filigree Purse Showcasing Odisha

PM Modi Gifts Cuttack’s Silver Filigree Purse to Ghana’s First Lady, Celebrates Odisha’s Tarakasi Craft

In a diplomatic gesture steeped in tradition and craftsmanship, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a handcrafted silver filigree purse from Odisha’s Cuttack to Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, during his official visit to Ghana. The elegant piece highlights the intricate Tarakasi artistry, a centuries-old silver filigree craft that is a hallmark of Odisha’s cultural heritage.

The purse, designed by skilled Cuttack artisans, features delicate floral and vine motifs woven from fine silver wires. The gift symbolizes not only India’s rich artisan traditions but also its efforts to promote indigenous crafts on the global stage.

The exchange took place during PM Modi’s visit to Accra, where he was also conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian honor — The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — by President John Dramani Mahama, in recognition of his contributions to strengthening India-Ghana relations.

Reacting to the gesture, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed pride and gratitude on social media platform X, stating, “Gifting a silver filigree purse to the Ghanaian First Lady is a proud moment for Odisha and a global recognition of our Tarakasi heritage. It reflects our Odia Asmita and timeless artistry.”

This marks the second global recognition for Tarakasi in recent weeks. During the G7 Summit in Canada last month, PM Modi had similarly gifted a silver filigree clutch to the Canadian Governor General, further amplifying international awareness of Odisha’s unique craft.

Tarakasi, which dates back over 500 years, is known for its intricate designs and high level of precision, traditionally used in jewelry and decorative items. The revival of such crafts on international platforms is seen as a vital step in preserving India’s artisanal legacy while boosting cultural diplomacy.
