Malini Awasthi Highlights Folk Music Revival

Folk Songs Witnessing Cultural Revival: Malini Awasthi

Renowned folk singer Malini Awasthi believes India is witnessing a cultural revival as traditional folk songs that were once forgotten are making a significant comeback. Awasthi, who has spent years documenting and popularizing the genre both in India and internationally, points to the resurgence of old traditions and folk music as a symbol of this revival.

The Padma Shri awardee, celebrated for her mastery over a variety of Indian folk traditions, is known for her command of dialects like Braj, Bundeli, Awadhi, Bhojpuri, and Kashika, a blend of Bhojpuri and Hindi spoken in Varanasi. Awasthi’s versatility extends beyond folk songs; she is also adept in classical ragas, ghazals, and regional traditions such as kajri, chaiti, dadra, phaag, and sohar.

As a classically trained musician, Awasthi has been instrumental in bringing folk music to a wider audience, ensuring its preservation while adapting it to contemporary tastes. Her efforts are seen as pivotal in reviving an integral part of India’s musical heritage.
