India Doesn’t Support ‘Cannes Kind’ of Cinema, Says Anurag Kashyap

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has voiced his frustration over the lack of government support for Indian cinema that receives recognition at prestigious international events like the Cannes Film Festival. Despite the recent success of independent filmmakers, Kashyap believes their victories are achieved independently, without state backing.

India made headlines at the 77th Cannes Film Festival last month, winning three significant awards. Payal Kapadia became the first Indian director to win the Grand Prix for her film “All We Imagine As Light.” Anasuya Sengupta received the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard category for “The Shameless,” and FTII student Chidananda S. Naik won Best Short Film in the La Cinef section for “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know.”

Kashyap, known for his candid opinions, expressed his discontent during an interview with PTI, saying, “I get very upset when it’s said ‘India@Cannes.’ This is a boost… a shot in the arm for a lot of independent filmmakers but their victory is their own.”

The acclaimed director’s comments highlight a persistent challenge for many Indian filmmakers striving for international acclaim without institutional support from their home country.
