NEW DELHI: A recent study has estimated that approximately one in every 127 people globally, or around 6.18 crore individuals, had autism in 2021. The neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by repetitive behavior and challenges in social skills, has emerged among the top 10 causes of non-fatal health burden in youth under the age of 20 years.

Signs of autism can appear as early as 12 months and include poor non-verbal communication, such as avoiding eye contact and not responding to their name. Published in the Lancet Psychiatry journal, the findings revealed that globally, autism cases among men were over twice those in women — with 1,065 cases for every one lakh men compared to 508 cases for every one lakh women.
