Government Revamps Swadesh Darshan Scheme to Promote Sustainable Tourism

The Ministry of Tourism has revamped the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, transforming it into Swadesh Darshan 2.0 with a renewed focus on sustainable and responsible tourism development. This was announced by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha today.

Under Swadesh Darshan 1.0, the government identified thematic circuits, with multiple destinations covered under each for integrated tourism development. However, after a comprehensive review, Swadesh Darshan 2.0 has shifted its approach to focus on the holistic development of specific delineated areas rather than broad circuits.

A New Vision for Tourism Development

The revamped scheme aims to develop tourist destinations in a sustainable and responsible manner, incorporating various elements of niche tourism. The initiative is expected to enhance visitor experience, boost local economies, and promote environmentally conscious tourism practices.

Impact Assessment and Monitoring

A third-party impact assessment conducted by the National Productivity Council in 2019 highlighted that Swadesh Darshan 1.0 successfully generated livelihood opportunities and employment for local communities, particularly during the construction phase. Swadesh Darshan 2.0 builds upon this success, with a structured approach to monitoring and evaluation to ensure effective project implementation.

The Ministry of Tourism has also outlined regular review mechanisms with state governments to track progress and address challenges in a timely manner. This will help optimize resources and enhance the efficiency of tourism development initiatives.

Boosting Tourism and Local Economies

With its focus on sustainable tourism, Swadesh Darshan 2.0 is set to play a crucial role in India’s tourism sector by fostering responsible travel experiences, improving infrastructure, and strengthening the socio-economic fabric of local communities.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of positioning India as a global tourist hub while preserving its cultural and natural heritage.
