Gas Leak from Abandoned Factory Sparks Panic in Odisha’s Chandaka

A gas leak from an abandoned chemical factory in the Chandaka area of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, caused panic on Saturday. Authorities rushed to the scene after reports of a potential hazard, but fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

The leak originated from a cylinder containing sodium hypochlorite, a chemical commonly used as bleach. “The leaking cylinder has been safely moved to an isolated location, and it will be neutralized,” said Dr. Sudhanshu Sarangi, Director General of Fire Service, who oversaw the emergency response.

The incident triggered concerns among residents, but authorities acted swiftly to prevent any harm. Local officials reassured the public that the situation is under control and urged residents to remain calm while the chemical is neutralized.

As the leak occurred in an abandoned facility, the cause of the gas escape is under investigation. Meanwhile, fire service personnel continue to monitor the site to ensure complete safety.

Sodium hypochlorite, while useful for disinfection, can pose health risks in high concentrations, particularly causing irritation to the respiratory system. However, prompt action from the fire service prevented any significant risk to the public.
