Gambhir Slams Roadshows After Bengaluru Tragedy

Gautam Gambhir Questions Roadshows After Bengaluru Tragedy: ‘Lives More Important Than Celebrations’

India head coach and former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has spoken out strongly against the culture of celebratory roadshows following major sporting victories, in the wake of the tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebration that claimed 11 lives near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Gambhir, known for his candid views, expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and questioned the necessity of public celebrations that put citizens at risk.

“I was never a believer in road shows,” Gambhir said firmly. “Lives of people are far more important than any sporting achievement.”

The tragic incident occurred during a massive crowd gathering organized to mark RCB’s maiden IPL title win. Overwhelmed by the turnout and lack of adequate crowd control measures, a stampede broke out, leaving several injured and 11 confirmed dead.

Gambhir, who has celebrated several major wins himself — including India’s 2007 T20 World Cup triumph and IPL victories with Kolkata Knight Riders — said that public figures and event organizers must act responsibly.

“We have to be responsible citizens. These functions shouldn’t be held if the city or the administration is not equipped to handle such large-scale gatherings. Celebrations can wait, lives cannot,” he added.

The comments from Gambhir, also a former BJP MP, have triggered widespread debate among fans, officials, and sports bodies regarding the safety and necessity of large-scale public gatherings to celebrate sporting milestones.

Meanwhile, authorities in Bengaluru have ordered a probe into the incident, and the RCB management has offered condolences to the families of the victims.
