England Favourites, But India Can Challenge

England Slight Favourites, But India Will Challenge Strongly: Hayden, Steyn on Upcoming Test Series

As India gears up to take on England in a high-stakes five-match Test series beginning Friday in Leeds, former international cricket stars have weighed in with mixed views on the likely outcome. While South African pace legend Dale Steyn believes England will edge the series 3-2, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden sees a strong opportunity for India — particularly if they can win in Leeds and Manchester.

“England will start as favourites, but this Indian side has the potential to push them hard, especially if they strike early in the series,” Hayden commented during a panel discussion on ‘JioHotstar’. He highlighted England’s bowling vulnerabilities, citing injuries and retirements that may hamper their attack.

Steyn, however, expects England to capitalise on home advantage and has backed the hosts for a narrow series win. “England’s conditions suit their style of play. With Bazball, they’ll look to dominate early and maintain momentum,” he said.

The series marks the beginning of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both teams. Leeds will host the opening Test, while Manchester will stage the fourth game starting July 23. With both teams eyeing early WTC points and carrying contrasting playing styles, cricket fans can expect a fiercely competitive series.
