Doctors in Odisha Remove Knife Piece from Lung

Doctors in Odisha Remove 8 cm Knife Piece from Man’s Lung After 3 Years
In a remarkable medical procedure, a team of doctors at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur successfully removed an eight-centimeter-long piece of a broken knife from the lungs of a 24-year-old man. The foreign object had been lodged in his body for the past three years, following a stabbing incident.
The operation was led by Dr. Sarada Prasanna Sahoo, associate professor of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department, who oversaw the procedure known as a right thoracotomy. The patient, identified as Santosh Das, hails from Kabisurya Nagar, a locality in the district.
Santosh had been living with the sharp metallic fragment inside his lungs, which had caused him recurring health issues over the years. However, the foreign object was only discovered after he sought medical attention for ongoing respiratory complications. Following a thorough examination, doctors determined that the piece of knife had to be surgically removed to prevent further health risks.
The surgery, performed on Tuesday, was a success, and doctors are optimistic about his recovery. The procedure involved carefully removing the knife piece from the lungs while minimizing damage to the surrounding tissue.
Doctors emphasized that such cases of foreign objects remaining inside the body for extended periods without detection are rare but possible, particularly in trauma situations. The successful removal of the knife piece marks a significant achievement for the medical team, showcasing their expertise in handling complex cases.
Santosh Das is expected to make a full recovery, and doctors have advised him to undergo further medical checks to ensure his lungs heal properly after the surgery.
This incident highlights both the dangers of concealed injuries and the crucial role of timely medical intervention in preventing long-term health complications.
