DMK-Led JAC Seeks Delimitation Freeze Extension

DMK-Led JAC Urges Centre to Extend Delimitation Freeze by 25 Years
The DMK-backed Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Saturday urged the Centre to extend the freeze on Parliamentary constituency delimitation by another 25 years, arguing that basing the exercise on population would be unfair to southern states.
The committee, which met in Chennai, decided to submit a joint representation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the ongoing Parliamentary session. A political consensus emerged against using population as the sole criterion for delimitation, as leaders stressed the need for fair representation.
The meeting, attended by three chief ministers, a deputy CM, and leaders from 14 parties across six states—including the BRS, BJD, and SAD—demonstrated strong opposition to the proposed delimitation exercise. The show of unity is seen as a significant political boost for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the DMK ahead of the state’s Assembly elections next year.
