Dhanush to Portray Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in Om Raut’s Biopic ‘Kalam’ Unveiled at Cannes

Tamil cinema star Dhanush is set to embody the role of India’s 11th President and renowned aerospace scientist, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, in an upcoming biopic titled Kalam: The Missile Man of India. The film, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Om Raut, was officially unveiled at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

The first-look poster, shared by Dhanush on Instagram, features the silhouettes of two figures with a missile soaring skyward between them, symbolizing Dr. Kalam’s pivotal role in India’s missile development. Expressing his sentiments, Dhanush wrote, “I feel truly blessed and deeply humbled to be portraying the life of such an inspirational and magnanimous leader — our very own Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, sir.” www.greatandhra.com+2www.ndtv.com+2Rediff+2

The biopic aims to chronicle Dr. Kalam’s extraordinary journey from his humble beginnings in Rameswaram to becoming a key figure in India’s defense and space programs, and eventually serving as the President of India. The narrative draws inspiration from Dr. Kalam’s bestselling memoir, Wings of Fire, and seeks to explore not just his scientific achievements but also his roles as a poet, teacher, and visionary leader. Director Om Raut, known for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, emphasized the significance of bringing Dr. Kalam’s story to the screen, stating, “In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness. He was a man who was known for the power of education, excellence, and indigenous innovation. To bring his story to the screen is an artistic challenge and a moral and cultural responsibility.” Telegraph India+3India Today+3Hindustan Times+3

The film is produced by Abhishek Agarwal and Bhushan Kumar under the banners of Abhishek Agarwal Arts and T-Series, respectively. The screenplay is penned by Saiwyn Quadras, known for his work on acclaimed biopics such as Neerja, Maidaan, and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran.

While the release date for Kalam: The Missile Man of India is yet to be announced, the project has already generated significant anticipation, promising to be a grand cinematic tribute to one of India’s most revered figures.
