CM Majhi Condemns Biju Statue Burning

Odisha CM Condemns Burning of Biju Patnaik’s Statue, Vows Strict Action

Bhubaneswar, April 15 (UNI): Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has strongly condemned the burning of a statue of legendary leader Biju Patnaik in Patnagarh, Balangir district, calling the act cowardly and deeply disrespectful.

Expressing sorrow over the incident, CM Majhi said such actions reflect a “sick mentality” and do not align with the values of Odia culture. He directed the police to take swift and strict action against the perpetrators and uncover any conspiracy behind the act. One person has already been arrested in connection with the case.

“The state government will not tolerate any disrespect toward its great sons. We are committed to preserving and honoring the legacy of Biju Babu,” Majhi stated. He further noted that Biju Patnaik’s birth anniversary was recently celebrated on March 5 with great enthusiasm at the state level, where he himself participated in paying tribute. The Chief Minister added that Biju Babu’s Shraddha Diwas will be observed on April 17.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism across the political spectrum. Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Sanjay Kumar Dasburma condemned the act, labeling it as “barbaric” and demanded immediate arrest of all those involved. He described Biju Patnaik as a towering figure who took part in the freedom struggles of three countries and symbolized “Odia Asmita”—the pride and identity of the Odia people.

“Biju Babu did not belong to any caste, creed, religion, or political party. He was a symbol of Odisha’s spirit. Such an attack on his memory is most unfortunate, and the BJD will not tolerate it. We will give a fitting reply,” Dasburma warned.

As investigations continue, political leaders and citizens alike are calling for unity and respect for the legacies of leaders who have shaped the state’s history.
