CBDT Chief Urges Tax Officials to Embrace Guidance Over Intimidation

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman, Ravi Agrawal, has called for a shift in the approach of income-tax department officials, advocating for a focus on guidance rather than intimidation in interactions with taxpayers. This directive comes as the income tax regime in India celebrates 164 years of operation.
In a recent online video session titled “The Chairman Speaks,” held on the 165th Income Tax Day on July 24, Agrawal emphasized the importance of adopting a ‘PRUDENT’ approach. He urged officials to enhance their professionalism by being responsible, responsive, and transparent in their dealings with taxpayers.
Agrawal’s remarks highlight a growing recognition of the need for a more supportive and constructive relationship between tax authorities and taxpayers. By advocating for guidance over intimidation, he aims to foster a more positive and collaborative environment, ultimately improving the efficiency and public perception of the tax administration system.
