BJP slams Congress over Women’s Bill defeat

Nitin Nabin on Friday criticised the Congress and its allies following the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, alleging that their stance reflected an “anti-women mindset” and amounted to a betrayal of women across the country.

Addressing reporters at the Parliament House complex, the BJP national president said the day could have marked a historic milestone for women’s empowerment but was instead overshadowed by what he described as a “grave betrayal” by the opposition.

Nabin accused the Congress-led alliance, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, of failing to support legislation aimed at ensuring greater political representation for women. “The Congress party and its anti-women alliance have committed a serious injustice against half of the nation’s population,” he said.

The proposed amendment bill sought to pave the way for enhanced reservation for women in legislatures, a long-pending demand aimed at improving gender representation in governance. Its defeat in the Lok Sabha has triggered sharp political reactions, with the ruling BJP holding the opposition responsible for blocking a key reform.

The Congress and its allies, however, have yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations, even as the political debate around women’s reservation continues to intensify.
