Bhubaneswar, Apr 13 : Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati on Sunday underscored that the responsibility of taking Bhubaneswar to greater heights lies not only with the government but equally with its citizens, urging collective efforts to shape a sustainable and inclusive future for the capital.

Addressing the 78th Capital Foundation Day celebrations, the Governor called on residents to actively contribute to preserving the city’s rich heritage while embracing modern development. He stressed the need for adopting environmentally responsible and pollution-free lifestyles to build a clean and resilient urban ecosystem.

Extending greetings to the people of the state, Kambhampati described Bhubaneswar as a unique blend of cultural legacy and modern aspirations. He paid tribute to German architect Otto Koenigsberger and former chief minister Harekrushna Mahatab for their visionary role in designing and establishing the capital city.

Highlighting Bhubaneswar’s historical roots, the Governor noted its deep connection with ancient Kalinga and landmark events such as the Kalinga War, which influenced Emperor Ashoka’s message of peace. He also referred to the flourishing of Jainism under King Kharavela and the enduring legacy reflected in the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves.

Describing Bhubaneswar as the “Temple City of India,” he highlighted iconic monuments such as the Lingaraj Temple, Mukteswar Temple, Rajarani Temple, and Parasurameswara Temple as symbols of architectural excellence and spiritual heritage.

Tracing its journey from ancient Sisupalgarh to a planned capital established in 1948, the Governor said Bhubaneswar has evolved into a major hub of governance, education, technology, and culture. He also highlighted its emergence as the “Sports Capital of India,” hosting several national and international events.

Kambhampati commended successive governments for planned urban development and praised initiatives such as the Smart Cities Mission, infrastructure expansion, and investments in IT and semiconductor sectors.

Lauding the efforts of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation in enhancing civic services and waste management, he urged citizens to support cleanliness drives and strive for a top rank in Swachh Survekshan.

Reaffirming the city’s future vision, the Governor called for preserving Bhubaneswar’s unique identity while embracing progress, stressing that collective action is key to building a sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready capital for generations to come.
