Odisha Halts Summer Power Disconnections Relief

Odisha Govt Bans Summer Power Disconnections for Households

Bhubaneswar, April 14: In a significant relief measure amid rising temperatures, the Odisha government has directed power distribution companies to refrain from disconnecting electricity supply to domestic consumers over unpaid bills during the summer of 2026.

Announcing the decision, Deputy Chief Minister K. V. Singh Deo, who also holds the Energy portfolio, said that no household in the state will face power disconnection for non-payment until the onset of the monsoon. The move aims to protect residents from extreme heat conditions, where access to electricity becomes essential for basic comfort and safety.

The government has also imposed a restriction on unscheduled power cuts related to unpaid dues. Distribution companies have been instructed to ensure uninterrupted supply, except in cases of essential repair and maintenance work. Even in such instances, outages must be pre-planned and communicated to consumers in advance through SMS alerts and public announcements.

Officials said the directive is part of a broader effort to ensure public welfare during peak summer months, when temperatures in Odisha often soar, increasing dependence on cooling appliances and water supply systems powered by electricity.

To ensure strict implementation, all concerned departments, agencies, and power distribution companies have been asked to sensitize their personnel about the new guidelines. A robust monitoring mechanism will also be put in place to track compliance and address any violations.

Additionally, the Energy Department’s Additional Chief Secretary has been tasked with overseeing the rollout of the directive and submitting a comprehensive action report to the government. This step is expected to strengthen accountability and ensure that the benefits of the policy reach every household.

The decision has been widely welcomed as a timely intervention, offering much-needed relief to consumers grappling with both soaring temperatures and financial pressures.
